Overview
Since the decline of communism, Albania has seen a dramatic revival that promises a prosperous future. The country’s capital city, Tirana is still, as yet, undiscovered by most tourists, but at its heart is a wealth of cultural and historic treasures. Tirana is a city where modern meets ancient, with architecture that dates back to the Roman period. Spend some time walking around the downtown area and you can easily find some of the city’s most fascinating buildings. Travellers with a curiosity for historic monuments will enjoy a visit to the Clock Tower in Skanderbeg Square, situated in the centre of the city.
Alternatively, you can visit the impressively beautiful Et’hem Bey Mosque to see its wonderful decorations. The National Historic Museum is a fantastic way to find out about Tirana’s history and see some of its most important artefacts up close. If you wish to explore further afield, then a tour nearby Mount Dajti by cable car would offer unbelievable panoramic views of the city.

Climate

Best Time To Visit
The temperature in Albania soars from June to August with very little rainfall. If you want to visit Tirana in the heat of the summer, then this is the best time to go. Albania’s climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean - enjoy glorious days of sunshine during this period. Trips to Tirana in September are usually less crowded, whilst accommodations and flights are considerably cheaper than the peak season, making this an excellent time to visit the city.

Tirana Attractions and Activities
1. Dajti Ekspres
Dajti Ekspres is a fun-filled family day and an outstanding introduction to the city, taking you up by gondola to the beautiful mountain on Tirana’s eastern edge. It is nearly a kilometre big, making it the longest in the Balkans, and holds the capability to rise more than 800 metres up the mountainside. Of course, the view over the city will be memorable, but there are also year-round activities on the table, including trekking and horseback riding in summer, and skiing in winter.

2. National Historic Museum
There isn’t any doubt - Albania and Tirana have an extremely complicated past. The museum houses pavilions, each covering a different period in the history of the region. The most valuable in terms of archaeological wealth is the Pavilion of Antiquity, where there’s a great collection of almost 600 items spanning the late-Palaeolithic to the early-Middle Ages.

3. Explore the Old Dictators Square
This is where the main monuments of Tirana are assembled, comprising Et’hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower and the National History Museum. The architecture encircling the square is neo-renaissance, and there is a huge lawn with flower beds to round off the stately atmosphere.

4. Dajti Mountain National Park
When feeling like experiencing the natural scenery, opt the trail connecting Mount Dajti with Mount Tujani, which rises to 1,580 metres. This peak is the highest in the park and can be scaled on foot if you’re a regular hiker. The mesmerising view from the mountain’s top is what the effort is for - not least as it includes the vast water reservoir, Lake Bovilla.

If you have plenty of time on your hands, then the city’s public transportation is the cheapest way to get around the city. Buses travel around the centre and also serve local suburbs. • Save some monies by opting the local bus, Rinas Express which is available from the Tirana Mother Teresa Airport and takes around 20 minutes to reach the city centre.
  • Try and stay in the city centre as it will be easier for you to navigate and explore the city without having to depend on non-reliable public transport.
  • If you want to savour the true flavour of Tirana, choose to eat in traditional places which are frequently visited by locals - here you will mostly find the Albanian cuisine.
  • Drinking is cheap in Tirana - skip cocktail bars and try the Komiteti Kafe Muzeum as it offers over 20 types of raki for not more than 2€/glass.
  • No is not acceptable when it comes to questions being asked during excellent hospitality given by Albanians, so learn to say Yes and make memories.
