Overview
The capital of Mozambique, Maputo used to be a Portuguese colony set on the south-east coast of Africa. In the colonial era, it was a hip place for luxury travellers from neighbouring Zimbabwe and South Africa. Now, the country has recreated itself and Maputo today offers its guests an invigorating mix of lush gardens, African traditions and eye-catchy colonial architecture. One of the most extraordinary buildings is Casa do Ferro on Avenida Samora Machel, designed by Gustav Eiffel; now it is a museum locally called as “The Iron House”.
To know how Mozambicans experience their beautiful city, head to the central market, where you will encounter everything from fruits to fresh calamari and crabs, handicrafts and vegetables. The most popular hotel in the city is The Polana, a place for the famous and rich in the past years.
