Overview
Set amidst the azure waters of the Aegean Sea and a mountain backdrop, the city of Izmir has plenty to offer its tourists. Whether you are unwinding in a cosy restaurant of the Alsancak region, wandering beside the waterfront promenade (the Kordon) or bartering for bargains at the bazaar, this is a city that offers a feast for all the senses. Food lovers will delight in the numerous culinary wonders, some of which are almost new to this part of the Turkey city.
This is especially true of the Kumru sandwich, available either with Turkish sausage or green pepper for a vegetarian option, served warm with cheese and tomatoes. Though the city has existed for more than 5,000 years, much of it was destroyed in a fire in the early 1920s. Though many of the main historical delights are no longer in existence, there is still much to be enjoyed, from glorious old churches to the Agora Roman bazaar.

Climate
With warm and temperate weather conditions, the winters of Izmir are more wet than the summer season. The average temperature of Izmir ranges around 16.7 °C.

Between November and March, you can expect the weather to be positively chilly at times, though there are likely to be occasional sunny days.

Buses are another possibility but the system is not particularly intuitive and some visitors have a tough time working out where each bus is going.

Also, they must own a passport with a validity of not less than 60 days beyond the expiry date of the traveller’s visa or the end of the traveller’s visa exemption period. Turkey has come up with an e-Visa scheme which allows nationals of more than 90 countries to apply for the visa in advance.

Tips for your stay in Izmir
  • When shopping from markets and private shops, do not forget to bargain.
  • All the public beaches are free but the beach equipment might cost you a small amount i.e. US$1-2.
  • Tipping is must almost everywhere - 10% in restaurants, taxi drivers and guides, and 20% at beauty salons and local baths.
