Overview
Gran Canaria is the most popular of all islands of the Caribbean Archipelago and is located in its southern part. Previously conquered by Spanish colonizers, this place was occupied by Guanches tribe. Slowly, the respective island got turned into a colony and later got transformed into one of the most wonderful provinces of Spain.
It’s even surprising to see so many different surroundings on such a small territory. Nature is truly magnificent and contrast – desert zones close to rocky hills border with spacious sand beaches that are surrounded by valleys of banana plantations.
Once you arrive at Gran Canaria Island, don't forget to visit Canteras Boulevard as multiple restaurants, cafés, shops and hotel are located there. There is also one more sight there - La Cueva pintada – a cave made of tuff with rock paintings that have been made over two thousand years ago. There are several beautiful castles on the islands. One of the most interesting is the Castillo de la Luz. This fortress was built to protect the island during the early Middle Ages, and in 1599 it was completely destroyed by pirates. A few years ago, the fortress was restored and opened in its walls the Museum of Navigation. Part of the historic building is used for various exhibitions and cultural events.

Gran Canaria Attractions and Activities
1. Poema del Mar
Gran Canaria’s only aquarium, and the island capital’s latest and, indeed, greatest tourist attraction. It's like watching a live recording of Blue Planet. Especially as you’ll be able to get up close and personal with the Asian sheepshead wrasse: the gender-switching fish that appeared on the show. Poema del Mar takes its name from the series of paintings made by arch symbolist Néstor Martín-Fernandez de la Torre between 1913 and 1924 which you can view in their original form in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s Museo Néstor.

2. Cueva Pintada
A Gáldar archaeological park and museum which transports you to pre-Spanish Gran Canaria. Cueva Pintada’s very much a work in progress, as archaeologists continue to dig in and around the Painted Cave. An excellent interactive video introduces you to Arminda’s world. Arminda is a canarii princess, daughter of the island Támaran’s last king.

3. Helidream Sky Experience
Gran Canaria boasts some dramatic scenery. For a panoramic vista, it’s best viewed from above. Helidream Sky Experience provides a plethora of packages suiting all kinds of tourists and explorers. Starting with one flying over the south coast of the island and going up to one hovering above the iconic Roque Nublo (Clouded Rock) in the heart of Gran Canaria and beyond.

4. Aphrodite
Use your resort as a base to explore the rest of the island rather than a destination. One way of doing so is by sailing into the chartered waters off the southwest’s Puerto Rico. Canary Boat Trips offers leisurely voyages in which you can sample the traditional Canarian cuisine.

5. Mercado del Puerto
Originally a fruit, veg, meat, fish, and seafood market dating back to the late nineteenth-century, stalls which have served locals down the years remain. Although they’ve been joined by several food and drink outlets. Eat and drink your way around the world at the likes of Mexico’s Ay Carmela LPA and Italy’s Cachúk, as well as supping on creative cocktails at DO Mercado.

Tips for your stay in Gran Canaria
  • If you are a beach lover, carry a good amount of sunblock with you along with insect repellent spray and warm clothes.
  • Do not drink tap water because it usually contains a lot of cleaning chemicals. Bottles with purified and mineral water are sold virtually everywhere.
  • Avoid swimming in beaches with a red flag as it is the sign of danger. The yellow flag is for experienced swimmers only, and the safest and cleanest beaches have the blue flag.
  • For safety, travellers are advised not to walk alone in remote areas of the resort.
  • Keep your valuable items like wallets, cameras and watches in the hotel room safe box - do not carry them without any particular use.
