Overview
Senegal's capital is full of colonial architecture, colourful streets, frenetic markets, and pulsating nightclubs. But it has another side too. If you want to chill out, you can relax on the city's northern beaches, or find peace and quiet on the city's offshore islands.
Place de l'Indépendance in Dakar is a central hub offering a great view of the grand colonial buildings. North-East of the city, Lake Retba (or Lac Rose) is known for its pink-tinted water. The Village des Arts house artists’ workshops and a gallery. Colonial buildings and the Maison des Esclaves Museum on the quiet harbour island of Île de Gorée trace the history of the African slave trade. The Marché des HLM market specializes in brightly coloured fabrics and has on-site tailors. Surfing is doable at northern beaches such as Yoff, just like diving around the offshore Île de Ngor island.

Climate
Dakar is influenced by the local steppe climate. In Dakar, there is little rainfall throughout the year. The Köppen-Geiger climate classification is BSh. Annually, the average temperature of Dakar goes up till 24.9 °C.

Tips for your stay in Dakar
  • Spanish being the official language of Dakar and Senegal, keeping two to three phrases in your pocket will take you a long way.
  • Not being a fast-paced city, everything is slow here – from traffic to ferry arrival.
  • Try and order something which is pre-prepared as the wait between ordering and serving might be counted in hours – mostly they purchase from the market what you ordered.
  • Avoid driving yourself and hire a cab/taxi to get around downtown.
  • Opt for dining in beachfront restaurants where food is fresh, relaxing, and cheap.
