Overview
Baghdad is the capital of Iraq. As of 2016, Baghdad is the biggest city in Iraq, the second-largest city in the Arab world and in Western Asia due to its vast population. Situated on the banks of the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Within a short time of its inception, Baghdad evolved into a significant cultural, commercial, and intellectual centre for the Islamic world.
Baghdad was the biggest city of the Middle Ages for much of the Abbasid era, peaking at a population of more than a million. With the remembrance of Iraq as an independent state in 1938, Baghdad gradually regained some of its former prominences as a significant centre of Arab culture

Baghdad Attractions and Activities
1. Saddam Hussein's Blood Quran
One of the Baghdad mosques houses a locked vault containing a Quran written in lovely Arabic calligraphy which, if not ink, could be displayed in a museum. But, to be precise, this holy book was written by Saddam Hussein’s blood.

2. The National Museum of Iraq
In 1938, many small jars were found in the collection of the National Museum of Iraq. These jars, previously overlooked, were found to be unique. Each consisted copper and iron and was sealed with asphalt.

3. Al-Shaheed Monument
Standing still like a surreal relic from an old civilization in an artificial Baghdad lake, Iraq’s Al-Shaheed Monument is an unforgettable reminder of the lives lost in the Iran-Iraq War. It consists of a 132-foot tall arabesque dome, covered in teal-coloured ceramic tiles.

4. Lalish Temple
Dating back 1000 of years, the village of Lalish is believed that the temple was first used by the ancient Sumerians. It is highly believed that the conical-roofed shrine contains the tomb of Sheikh Adi ibn Musafir, the religion’s chief saint.

5. Erbil Citadel
Settlements built on top of older settlements for 7,000 years have created a large elevated mound in the heart of the historic city of Erbil (also known as Hawler) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Erbil Citadel standing on the top of the elevated ground is a true witness to the passing of history and time.
